Jacqueline Jamal Dancing

Arab Dancer, Jacqueline Jamal presents exclusive footage of some of her best-loved dances:

Playing with a Veil: Jacqueline moves simply to show the effect of air currents and light on the veil, magically displaying subtle changes in energy, normally invisible to the eye.

Baladi: The traditional women's solo dance of Egypt, starting with slow movements emanating from the centre of the dancer's body and building through a crescendo of faster, rythmic movements with expression ranging from soulful to entertaining.

Song of Solomon: The Pop Video: This popular music, released as a single, and the accompanying choreography, filmed as a pop video.

Just Shimmying: Jacqueline's mastery of of the infamous shimmy movement has been much admired but never so eloquently described as by Ismene Brown writing in the Daily Telegraph: '..the gold tissue at her hips is humming like the wings of a humming bird...'

Nay Taqsim: Taqsim describes an improvisation by a solo instrumentalist. The traditional theme is of "lost love and longing" and the dancer uses her joints and surrounding muscles to add visual expression to the music. The 'Nay' is an Egyptian flute.

Sword Play: A dramatic interpretation of the author Flaubert's account of the late Egyptian Dancer Aziza. It was choreographed for the critically acclaimed theatre show "Dancing Girls" in which Jacqueline played Aziza.

The collection is produced in memory of film editor Tim Bevan and 50p from the sale of your video will go to Leukemia Research.
